# How to Find Your MT5 Broker Server Name

> Where to find your MetaTrader 5 server name on desktop, mobile and in your broker's email, why demo and live differ, and the mistakes that break a login.

## In short

- The server name tells software which of your broker's trade servers the account lives on — for example VantageMarkets-Demo or ICMarkets-Live02.
- Find it in MetaTrader 5 next to the account, in the mobile app's account screen, or in the email the broker sent when the account was opened.
- It must match exactly. Demo and live are different servers, and Live02 is not Live.
- A wrong server name looks like a wrong password: the broker rejects the login.

To connect a MetaTrader 5 account to anything — an app, a copier, an API — you need three things: the account number, the trading password, and the **server name**. The server name is the one people most often get slightly wrong.

## Where to find it

**MetaTrader 5 on desktop.** Open the *Navigator* window (Ctrl+N). Under *Accounts*, each account is listed with its server. The login dialog — *File → Login to Trade Account* — shows it too.

**MetaTrader 5 on mobile.** Open the account screen in the app's settings. The server is shown under the account number.

**Your broker's email.** When an account is opened, brokers send the login and the server name. Search your inbox for the account number.

**The broker's client area.** Most brokers list each account with its platform and server.

It looks like `BrokerName-Demo`, `BrokerName-Live` or `BrokerName-Live02` — sometimes with a space and a number, such as `VantageInternational-Live 11`.

## Demo and live are different servers

Brokers run demo accounts and real-money accounts on separate servers. The names usually say which: `…-Demo`, `…-Live`, `…-Real`. A demo login sent with a live server name is refused, even though the number and password are right.

That separation is useful. Connecting a demo account on a demo server is the safest way to build and test an integration — see testing an MT5 API without risking real money.

## Common mistakes

| Mistake | Example | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Demo and live swapped | `-Demo` for a live account | Login rejected |
| Wrong numbered server | `-Live` for a `-Live02` account | Login rejected |
| A different brand or region | The server on the broker's homepage, not the one the account was opened on | Login rejected |
| Extra spaces from copy-paste | `"ICMarkets-Live02 "` | A different name: login rejected |
| Changed capitals or hyphens | `icmarkets live02` | May not match |

The server is matched exactly, as the broker spells it. fxapis stores the name exactly as you send it, so trim what users type.

## A connection checklist

Before you connect an account, confirm:

1. The **account number**, digits only.
2. The **trading** password — not the investor password, which logs in but cannot trade. See investor vs trading password.
3. The **server name**, copied from MetaTrader or the broker's email, with no spaces at either end.
4. That it is a **demo** account, the first time.
5. That the account does not require **two-factor sign-in** at login; an API cannot complete it.

Then bring the account online straight away and check its state, so a wrong detail shows up while the user is still on your connect screen rather than at their first trade.

## If the login fails

With fxapis, a rejected login moves the account to `invalid_credentials`. fxapis then stops retrying — repeated failed logins are how brokers lock accounts — so fix the details rather than trying again. You can correct the password and the server on the existing account:

```bash
curl -X POST https://api.fxapis.com/v1/accounts/$ACCOUNT_ID/password \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FXAPIS_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{ "password": "the-trading-password", "server": "VantageMarkets-Live" }'
```

Then bring it online again and poll its status.

## Questions

### What is an MT5 server name?

It is the name of the broker trade server that holds a MetaTrader 5 account, such as VantageMarkets-Demo. Software needs it, together with the account number and the trading password, to log in to the account.

### Is the server name the same for demo and live accounts?

No. Brokers run separate servers for demo and live accounts, usually with Demo or Live in the name. A demo login will not work on a live server, or the other way round.

### My broker has several live servers. Which one is mine?

The one your account was opened on. Numbered servers such as Live02 or Live 11 are separate servers, and an account exists on exactly one of them. Check MetaTrader or the broker's account email.

### What happens if I enter the wrong server name in fxapis?

The broker rejects the login and the account moves to invalid_credentials. Correct the server with POST /v1/accounts/{id}/password, adding the server field, then bring the account online again.
